With the success of the Nano car, the word 'Nano' has become a buzzword within the Tata group, with practically every company of the group wanting to do some 'Nano' (low-cost) project, R. Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director, Tata Sons Ltd, said on Monday. Speaking to journalists here on 'Innovation and innovativeness - The Tata Experience', Gopalakrishnan said that there were many 'Nano' projects in the offing, such as Nano Housing, the proposed low-cost housing project of the Tatas. In one of the presentations made to the media by the Tata Group officials today, showed a 'Nano cement' - but that came in the list of projects that had not taken off.
Need to innovate
Gopalakrishnan observed that the next decade would be one marked by the need to innovate. This in mind, the Tata Group has begun to streamline and document the innovations that are happening in the group companies.
A Tata Group innovation forum has been set up to formalise innovation, which includes cross pollination of ideas and a system of recognition and awards. The idea is to foster the culture of innovation and as such, there is a category of awards even for failed innovation projects.
Dr Santanu Chakrabarti of Tata Steels Ltd spoke of a successful attempt in the company to reduce time, and consumption of water, in the process of annealing steel. The team that worked on the project substituted water with 'nano liquid' - a water-based solution containing suspended solids (fine grains of metal oxides).
For a one-time investment of Rs 50 lakh, the company would save Rs 5 crore annually, but more significantly, the company will be able to make more steel with less waterOne of the presentations said that the number of innovation projects registered for awards rose from 101 in 2006 to 1,712 in 2009. The number of failed projects that were nominated for awards increased from 12 in 2007 to 115 in 2009.
One of the 'failed projects' was of Tata Tetley. The company wanted to bring in flavours in the form of soluble capsules - you put them in your drink (any drink) to get the flavour you want. It did not work out, but the company is now working on the concept with liquids and sprays.
Another failed concept was a plastic door for the Nano car. The door, with reinforced metal bars, passed every crash test, but was still rejected because it might be perceived by the public as unsafe.

Lucky 7 gets Nano Vroom.... People’s car
Rajendra Singh, who has a workshop for repairing vehicles at Ratu Road, today became the first proud owner of the Nano in the capital.
Singh was handed over the keys of his new vehicle — a lunar silver Tata Nano LX — by Rama Automobiles, an authorised dealer of Tata Motors. “Nano was the dream of Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata. This is what inspired me to go for it,” said an elated Singh after getting keys.
As he rolled out his dream car from the showroom and headed straight for a gurdwara on Ratu Road, Singh said he would take his family for a ride in the evening. The Nano LX, priced at Rs 1,89,464 on road, is the fourth car that will grace Singh’s garage.
Apart from Singh, six other customers got the people’s car. Two of them — Anshu Mishra and Neerja Singh — received the keys from Rama Automobiles.
“We have booked well over 400 vehicles, out of which 350 would be delivered by end of December 2010,” said Sandeep Ganguli, the general manager of Rama Automobiles.
At Basudev Automobiles, another Tata Motors dealer, four persons became proud owners of Nano cars. The first among them was Budhan Lohar, a resident of Nayatoli. For Lohar, this is the first four-wheeler that he now owns. He went for the Nano LX, the top model. “I decided to buy a Nano as it suited my budget,” said Lohar.
Over 500 people had booked the Nano at Basudev Automobiles. Deepak Dev, its general manager, said that they would ensure quick delivery of the vehicles.
“I was eagerly waiting for my new car. Tomorrow, I will take my family members on a long drive,” Sukhdeo Bhagat, another Nano owner.

Recently we saw the launch of the Tata Nano, the world’s cheapest car. The company is now working on its next project for those with little cash. The new project, which has been dubbed Nano homes by the Indian media, will offer the world’s cheapest homes in India.
The Tata housing project will offer one-room, 283 sq ft flats, which is half the size of a squash court. The price of the flat will be 390,000 rupees (£5,200), which The Telegraph explains will be on the outskirts of Mumbai, normally property prices there compete with other cities such as London and New York.
Tata will offer a more expensive option, for 670,000 rupees (£9,000) is 465 sq ft flat, that gives you a separate living room and separate bedroom.
These small homes are aimed at Indian families who just cannot afford to get on to the property ladder. It is expected that millions of slum-dwellers are expected to jump at the chance of owning their own property, and Tata is just the company to offer them the chance.

Tatas' nano housing plan takes off in style
Tata Group has sold around 3,500 application forms for its low-cost housing project, Shubh Griha near Mumbai, in the first two days of booking, three-and-a-half times the number of apartments the company is planning to build under the project, a company executive said.
The pricing of the project has taken many by surprise. Its Shubh Griha website has received 15 lakh hits in four days since announcement of the project. This includes 6.7 lakh hits from the US and 3.3 lakh hits from India, as per the executive.
“The response only reflects the huge demand for housing in that segment,” Tata Housing managing director Brotin Banerjee said, adding that the company had already sold off all printed forms in just two days. Ten branches of State Bank of India started selling forms across Mumbai on Monday.
The bank branches located in the western suburbs linked to Boisar have seen better sales of application forms, a senior marketing executive said, adding that the company was receiving enquiries from many other cities, including Delhi and Bangalore.
