SBI may account for 50% of total bookings

Kolkata, May 18 State Bank of India might account for almost 50 per cent of the total loan bookings made for the small car Nano and is hopeful of disbursing loans worth Rs 900 crore, according to the bank’s Chief General Manager, Personal Banking, Mr P. Nandakumaran.

“Seventy per cent of the total bookings (2.03 lakh) announced by Tata Motors Ltd were booked through loans. SBI will be targeting about 50 per cent of the total loan bookings which will work out to about 75,000 applicants,” Mr Nandakumaran told Business Line.

“The bookings for Nano have primarily come from urban and metro centres,” Mr Nandakumaran confirmed. Business Line had earlier reported that the Nano had received a lukewarm response from Tier II and Tier III towns, which were originally perceived as the primary market for the car.

The bank had offered a Nano booking loan product with a one-time upfront booking fee of Rs 2,999 for the base model (which has an ex-showroom price of Rs 1.2 lakh in Delhi), Rs 3,499 for the intermediate model (Rs 1.40 lakh) and Rs 3,999 (Rs 1.70 lakh) for the high-end model.

The booking could be converted into a SBI Nano car loan once a customer gets allocation to the car. The maximum tenure of the loan would be seven years and the rate of interest could range between 11.75 and 12 per cent interest.

The margin required would be 15 per cent, which means for a loan of Rs 1 lakh, the customer would have to pay upfront cash of Rs 15,000 while the bank would pay the balance of Rs 85,000.

Auto loan share

SBI’s auto loan portfolio grew by 36 per cent at Rs 9,713 crore (Rs 7,149 crore) in 2008-09. According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the market share of the bank in auto loans increased to 12 per cent (10 per cent) this year. Apart from a tie-up with Tata Motors for Nano, the bank has also tied up with Maruti and Hyundai.

Tata Nano Makes 2.03 Lakh Bookings

The Tata Nano has drawn over 2.03 lakh fully paid bookings amounting to nearly Rs.2,500 crores, in an encouraging response to the car launched on 23rd March.

The Tata Nano website recorded an unprecedented 3 crore (30 million) hits from the date of launch of the car to the closure of the booking period (25th April, 2009), nearly 1 million hits a day. About 14 lakh people walked in to Tata Motors Showrooms, Croma and Westside stores across the country to catch a glimpse of the car. A total of 6.10 lakh forms were purchased from the booking centres. 70% of the 2.03 lakh bookings received were financed, while 30% of the applicants booked in cash by paying fully. About 4,000 cash bookings were made online through www.tatanano.com, a first for the auto industry in India. Among the three variants of the car, 20% bookings are for the Nano Standard, 30% for the Nano CX and the remaining 50% for the top-end Nano LX.

As announced on 23rd March, the first 100,000 allottees from among the applicants will be chosen through a computerised random selection procedure, and the announcement will be made within 60 days of closure of the booking. Deliveries will start in July 2009, and are expected to be completed in the last quarter of 2010, while all efforts would be made to ramp up production and deliver earlier.

Simultaneously along with the announcement of the first 1 lakh successful allottees, Tata Motors will also announce the allotment of those booking applicants who have expressed their interest in retaining their bookings with the company even if they do not form part of the first 1 lakh allottees. The retainees will earn an interest on their booking amount, effective from that date. The booking amounts of unsuccessful applicants who have not chosen to retain their booking amounts will be refunded at the same time.

Tata Motors places on record its gratitude to the people of India for according such a warm welcome to the Tata Nano, and to all its preferred financiers, dealers and partner companies in making the Tata Nano far more accessible.

Nano Booking Over - Still Counting Nano Booking Numbers

The booking for the world's cheapest car Nano launched by the Tatas has ended but the numbers are still being counted, a Tata Motors spokesperson said. The market estimates on the bookings vary from as few as a couple of lakhs to over one million.

Tata motors itself has not given any information so far. The spokesperson said the company is still compiling the number and the exercise may take a few days.Enquiries with some of the banks with which the company has tied up for booking and financing of the car also failed to reveal any information on the number of bookings. However, carwale.com, one of the websites which accepted online booking for Nano, said it has done 10,000 bookings of Tata's Nano car. "We have secured 10,000 bookings of Nano across 500 cities," carwale.com Vice-President Tufail Khan told PTI.He said 50 per cent of the booking has been done through credit cards and the rest through cheque payment.

About 55 per cent of the bookings have been for the top- end version of the Nano, 25 per cent for the middle version and the remaining 20 per cent is for the base model.

Nano booking forms pile up

With only a day to go before Tata Motors closes the bookings for the Nano, some of the company’s dealers seem to be a worried lot. These dealers, who had bought between 2,000 and 10,000 application forms, anticipating huge demand for booking, are now stuck as a large chunk has remained unsold. But, company insiders think there will be substantial increase in bookings on the last day (Saturday). The dealers had bought each booking form for Rs 250 and had sold it to customers for Rs 300.

According to a prominent Mumbai-based Tata Motors
dealer, a substantial chunk of the forms that was bought by him from the company are still unsold. “It seems we had overestimated the demand for the Nano as over 30% of the total forms we had bought are still with us. We are hoping that customers will buy the forms and book the car on the last day.”

Asked whether the dealers have put forth a request to solve the issue of the unsold Tata Nano booking forms, the Tata Motors’ spokesperson said: “We have no such issues from dealers on our table. Hypothetically, even if there were to be such an issue, it would be an internal mater of the company and its dealers and need not be commented publicly.”

Confusion over the booking procedure, unavailability of test drives, uncertainty over delivery schedules are some of the reasons that seem to have forced customers to stay away from booking, said other people connected with the development
.

All major metro markets have seen greater demand for the mid- and top-end variants of the Nano, while the tier II and tier III markets have seen more bookings of the base- and mid-Nano variants. Earlier, industry estimates were that bookings would be in the range of 5 lakh to 10 lakh.

Currently, industry sources indicate a total booking figure of around 2 lakh. It is expected that the Nano would be more successful in the tier II and tier III markets. A Tata Motors dealer, based out of a tier III city in Gujarat, said: “The response for the forms is on the lower side.”

However, as far as online sales were concerned, Nano was a hit. The Rs 1 lakh car can be booked online through the dedicated portal, carwale.com. The portal had set a target to sell bookings for 10,000 cars and it has achieved that. The Mumbai-based dealer said they are planning to approach Tata Motors to take back the unsold forms. The meeting could likely happen on Monday, said one of the dealers.

Firms Book Nano in Bulk to Reward Employees

Kolkata: The firms in India are opting for relentless booking of Tata Motor's car Nano, to offer it as an employee reward. Employees in the IT sector too, who have been pummeled by the recession, have chosen Nano as their preferred car and are aggressively making a dash for it.

"Apart from Shree Cement, Linc Pen too has gone in for bulk Nano bookings through us. The pen major has booked 11 Nanos," Anil Bagaria, Managing Director of KB Motors, a Tata Motors dealer told The Economic Times. Shree Cement has booked 1000 Nanos for the purpose. "I decided to book Nano not because it is a cheap car but due to its fuel efficiency. The cars will be given to the employees as part of the company's HR strategy," said Shree Cement Managing Director HM Bangur.

The decision comes as part of driving employee motivation during the recession, without mounting on costs. Sectors like FMCG, pharma, telecom and healthcare are going ahead with employee reward schemes and according to HRs, Nano can be a viable option. "Instead of rewarding top performers with incentives like foreign holiday tours, Nano is emerging as an alternative reward option. Even for those in sales function, gifting Nano could be a way to upgrade them from two-wheelers to four-wheelers," said E Balaji, CEO, Ma Foi Management Consultants.

Mixed Response form People to Nano

Simon Boxall, a UK expert on climate change and oceanography, has a mixed response to Nano, the recent addition to the Tatas’ stable of four-wheelers.

“[It is] good because it is a low-energy product and more economical. Shame is that it is not built with hydrogen-cell or electric technology,” he says.

In Hyderabad, to interact with media about ‘Communicating the Climate Change’, Dr. Boxall, the lead scientist of the ‘Cape Farewell’ initiative on global warming, feels that Nano, while being more fuel-efficient vis-À-vis a Ford, can be much more destructive due to its accessibility to millions.

He asserts that India, by pioneering a new industrial revolution, can guide others in finding better, alternative technologies. And nothing could work better than enforcement to promote such paradigm shift in use of technologies. Is not alternative technology expensive? Legislation can spiral the production which on a massive scale will reduce the costs.
No-fuel cars

“If you turn off fuel supply, Tata, Ford, and Chrysler will come out with no-fuel cars within two years,” he quips and refers to the failure and subsequent success of energy-efficient light bulbs in Britain. Initially, the response was not good. The bulbs were expensive, emitted nasty light and took time to illuminate. Pressure from government forced the industries to improve the technology and it worked.” Same was the case with products of low CFC emissions.

“People respond negatively to environmental issues because they think they will have to lose some of their luxuries. But being energy-efficient does not have to cost you your luxury, or the earth,” he says.

Cape Farewell, the project Dr. Boxall heads, aims to disseminate the concept of climate change by clubbing scientists with artists, educators, writers on cruise expeditions to High Arctic.

Nano Forms nets Rs 15 crore to Tata Motors on 500,000 Bookings

State Bank cuts loan rates to 10 per cent.Within 15 days of opening the registration process for Nano, its Rs 1 lakh car, Tata Motors has sold nearly 500,000 application forms, raking in Rs 15 crore (at Rs 300 each). Distributors associated with the Nano bookings said most of the forms were likely to translate into bookings.

The sale of forms started on April 1, bookings began from April 9 and close on April 25.

State Bank of India (SBI), which has now decided to offer loans at 10 per cent during the first year, against 11.75 per cent before, has already issued over 100,000 forms, sources close to the development said. “Out of the total forms, one-fourth has been sold by SBI,” a person familiar with the bookings process told Business Standard.

On the number of bookings so far, a Tata Motors spokesperson described the response as “encouraging”. “The number of booking applications received will be announced after a few days of the closure of the booking process on April 25. All the booking applications will be subjected to a computerised random selection procedure. Within 60 days of the closure of bookings on April 25, Tata Motors will process and announce the allotment of 100,000 cars in the first phase of deliveries,” the spokesperson said in an e-mailed response. Delivery of the car will begin from July, the statement added.

SBI has been distributing the forms since April 5 through its 1,350 branches in more than 850 cities. In all, Tata Motors is using around 30,000 outlets, including group-owned retail chains Croma and Westside, in about 1,000 cities for distribution of forms.

Other financiers with whom Tata Motors has tied up include Tata Motor Finance, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Punjab National Bank. The forms are also sold through 218 dealers. In the first lot, each dealer was given 2,500 forms. Almost all of them exhausted these by the end of the third day.

Nano car loans carry a maximum tenure of seven years, against five years for most car loans. Interest rates for Nano are in line with other car loans now, which is estimated at 10-11 per cent. In addition, most banks have also started providing a finance facility for the booking amount of Rs 3,000.

Nano Finally Arives, Plenty of Interest Allover Inda

At 6:46 p.m. on April 9, R. Sampath-kumar signed a check for 3,809 rupees ($78) and ordered his first car: a Tata Nano.

Bookings for the ultra-cheap car, which retails for 100,000 rupees ($2,050) plus tax and transport fees, opened last week across India.

Sampathkumar, who is 30 years old and single, makes about 20,000 rupees a month ($410) as a goldsmith and says he wants a Nano for status.

Automatically, women will come forward, he said, grinning.

Dozens gathered to gawk at the silver Nano sitting on a red platform with pink satin skirting at the Tata dealership in Coimbatore, a mid-size manufacturing hub in southern India. Two deejays blasted Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin and Madonna songs, while college kids snapped photos of the snub-nosed car on their cell phones.

Despite the festivities, analysts say Nano sales won't do much in the short term to help debt-strapped Tata Motors, which is facing falling sales and is in talks with banks to refinance a $2 billion loan it took out to buy Land Rover and Jaguar from Ford last year.

Vaishali Jajoo, auto analyst at Mumbai's Angel Broking, estimated that even if Tata Motors manages to sell 250,000 Nanos a year, it will only add 3 percent to the company's total revenues.

Production constraints mean Sampathkumar won't get his new Nano until July, at the earliest. Violent farmer protests forced Tata to relocate at the last minute a factory that was to exclusively build Nanos, and the replacement won't be operational
Advertisement
before year's end.

Customers who want to buy the Nano must pay 300 rupees for an application form, then pay the entire cost of the car or get financing from one of 18 banks Tata Motors made special arrangements with.

Tata will accept orders until April 25 and then randomly select 100,000 people who will get the first shipment of vehicles. Everyone else will have to wait. Tata will pay interest on booking deposits: 8.5 percent for people who have to wait one to two years to get their Nano, and 8.75 percent for those who hold out longer.

Tata spokesman Debasis Ray said 300,000 people had visited Tata's 400 showrooms across the country since the car went on display April 1.

Vijayakumar Jayabal, 50, a policeman who earns 12,000 rupees ($246) a month, said he wants to buy a Nano because he can't squeeze his family of four onto his motorbike.

We only fit three people maximum, he said.

Buyers of Nano have to pay more

Tata Motors may seek extra money from the short-listed one lakh Nano customers, whose delivery will be pending till April 2010. This is because the company will be forced to upgrade the car’s pollution parameters, and implement BS-lV emission norms after April 2010.

Auto industry experts say that these customers will have to shell out an additional Rs 6,000-Rs 10,000 if they get the delivery of Nano after March 31, 2010, when the Bharat Stage — IV (BS-IV) norms will come into effect. At present, Tata Motors’ manufactures Nano’s with BS-II and BS-III engines. After April 2010, the company will be manufacturing BS-III and BS-IV-compliant cars. “From the date that BS-IV and BS-III norms become applicable in the respective cities, the company will sell only BS-IV and BS-III Nanos in those cities,” said Debasis Ray, head — corporate communications of Tata Motors, in an e-mail response.
When asked whether the company would charge extra after BS-IV norms come into effect, he said, “As we have mentioned in our ‘terms & conditions’ of the booking process, Tata Motors retains the right to change the BS II/III preference of the customer in the event that the norms/regulations change, based on the city selected. The company will intimate the customer about the same, and the customer will have to pay the differential amount, as may be applicable, before taking delivery of the car.”

Considering the limited capacity of the Pantnagar plant in Uttarakhand, which has manufacturing capacity of 50,000 units per year, the mother plant at Sanand in Gujarat will start production by end of this year or early next year. The remaining 50,000 customers are likely to be asked to pay more money for Nano before its delivery. At present, there is a difference of around Rs 6,000 between the BS-II and BS-III models. But, in case of BS-IV variant of Nano, the difference may be higher, the expert added.

Asking for more money from customers would be against Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata’s commitment that the initial one lakh customers, who would be picked through a computer draw, would be promised price protection, which means they would be getting the cars as per the promised launch day prices despite economic conditions in the future.

After April 2010, the BS-IV norms will be applicable in 11 cities, while BS-III norms will be implemented in semi-urban and rural areas. The emission norms will help in reducing sulphur content in the air. “To meet the stringent BS-IV emission norms, the company will have to upgrade the catalytic converter that leads to emission of sulphur and carbon monoxide into the atmosphere,” said Vivek Chattopadhyaya, senior researcher – clear air programme, Centre for Science and Environment. An expert from the Automotive Research Association of India said, “It would be better if uniform emission norms are implemented in the country. This will not only reduce pollution but also help customers to buy same vehicle across the country.”

FAQ's for Tata's Nano, world's cheapest car

Bookings for Tata Motors (TAMO.BO) eagerly awaited Nano, dubbed the world's cheapest car, open on Thursday.

The Nano was formally launched by Chairman Ratan Tata on March 23 and has been available for viewing in showrooms around the country from April 1, as are application forms.

The Nano made a much-trumpeted debut in January 2008 and was due to go on sale late last year, but its arrival was delayed by a dispute over the land where a purpose-built facility was to be located.

Following are some frequently asked questions.

WHAT WILL THE NANO COST?

Prices vary, but the standard Nano will cost 100,000 rupees ($1,993), ex-factory, though this is available to only 100,000 buyers who will be selected through a computer generated draw sometime between late-April and late-June. Showroom prices start from 112,735 rupees for the standard version and go up to 185,375 rupees for the luxury version.

WHAT IS THE BOOKING FEE FOR THE NANO?

For the standard version it is 95,000 rupees, rising to 120,000 rupees for the mid-segment model and 140,000 rupees for the luxury variant.

WHAT IS THE BOOKING PROCESS?

Customers can book online at www.tatanano.com and pay the booking fee there. Or they can book via forms at specified branches of State Bank of India (SBI.BO), the country's largest lender which is managing the process, dealerships and other outlets. Customers can get financing from 18 banks and Tata Motors Finance. Booking fees for financing start from 2,850 rupees for the standard model, at interest rates ranging from 9 percent to 14.25 percent.

HOW MANY NANOS WILL TATA MAKE?

Large-scale production has been delayed by the relocation row that shifted output to Gujarat from West Bengal last year. As a stop-gap arrangement, Nanos will be rolled out from Tata's existing car factory in Pantnagar in Northern India, which has the capacity to produce 50,000 units a year.

WHEN WILL CUSTOMERS GET THEIR CARS?

Bookings close on April 25, and within 60 days Tata Motors will announce the allotment of 100,000 cars in the first phase of deliveries. These 100,000 cars will be price protected at the launch price until delivery, but the booking fee will bear no interest for the customer. Deliveries will start from July.

WHAT HAPPENS TO CUSTOMERS NOT AMONG THE INITIAL 100,000?

Applicants can rollover their booking deposit even if they aren't among the first 100,000 buyers. They will earn interest on that deposit -- from the date that a second phase allotment is announced -- at 8.5 percent to rollover the deposit for between 1 and 2 years and 8.75 percent for more than 2 years. The allotment of those keeping their deposits at Tata will be announced along with those chosen for the first 100,000 cars.

HOW BIG IS THE NANO?

The car can seat 4 people. Tata's chairman has said his inspiration for the cheap car was the common sight on Indian roads of a family of four riding a motorbike.

HOW MANY INDIANS OWN A CAR?

There are around 9 vehicles per 1,000 people, well below levels in developed countries. India's population is around 1.1 billion.

HOW MUCH DOES A 2-WHEELER (SCOOTER, BIKE) COST?

Prices of motorcycles range from 30,000 rupees at the low end to 1.2 million rupees at the higher-end. Tata has said the Nano aims to give people the chance to shift from a bike to car ownership.

Nano display turns no show

The traffic enforcement staff at the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation got the rare privilege of taking the Tata Nano for a test drive after impounding one kept on display in front of the passport office in Sector 34, Chandigarh, albeit without permission.

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation impounded the car and fined the dealers for carrying out commercial activity on public land without obtaining prior permission. The car was taken to the Corporation office in Sector 17 around noon, from where the dealers, Joshi Auto Zone, got it released later in the evening.

The car, put on display around noon with banners splashed all around by the State Bank of India offering loans, initially attracted curious onlookers in large numbers. Much to their surprise, and the chagrin of the car dealers, Corporation officials soon arrived and drove it away.

“We booked the dealers as they had not taken permission for the display. They have been issued a challan of Rs 1,000,” said MC Joint Commissioner T P S Phulka.

The car dealers and SBI officials, meanwhile, continued to pass the buck to each other. “The car was parked in the parking lot. The display banners by the SBI was what invited trouble as they were without permission,” said Dipak Joshi, owner of Joshi Auto Zone.

An SBI official, however, said on the condition of anonymity that that they have put up banners everywhere after a national-level tie-up with Nano. “We are just facilitating loans for the car. If the car was for display without permission, we are not at fault,” the official added.
